History of Athol

Starting as a village in 1909 and later incorporated as a city in 1967, this small town was settled initially by the indigenous Coeur d’Alene and Spokane Tribes. In the 1800s, European trappers and explorers began entering the area and in 1882 the Northern Pacific Railroad station was built in hope of creating a vast agricultural paradise. 

In 1902 Hacket & Wilson opened a sawmill near the city. This mill soon became the largest employer in the area causing more businesses to open. Today Athol maintains a small town feel and is located just four minutes from the 4,000 acres Farragut State Park and only 10 miles from the 142 acre Round Lake State Park.
